In-Service Training Calendar

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in cooperation with the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy is pleased to announce "Application of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) in School Security Surveys Training".

This training is intended to prepare the participant to comprehensively examine a school's physical environment for crime vulnerabilities. Utilizing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, coupled with Situational Crime Prevention and the Rational Choice Theory, this course provides a unique understanding of how the environment impacts crime in the school or university. This course provides an easy to use customizable foundational survey tool to begin to identify vulnerabilities, suggest solutions, and prepare a comprehensive report. This training provides practical suggestions for K-12 institutions as well as applicable information for addressing college and university settings and dorms. A prior working knowledge of CPTED is helpful.

  • Campus Housing and Prevention
  • Using and Customizing the Provided Survey Tool

Participants

This training is intended for school resource officers, university law enforcement officers, school and university security personnel, crime prevention practitioners and, any law enforcement or school staff that may be responsible for participating in school security surveys.

Please note that participants should bring a laptop computer equipped with Microsoft Word for use of the survey tool to be provided. If available a digital camera is also recommended.
