Child abuse investigations demand precision, sensitivity, and coordination across multiple disciplines. This three-day course provides law enforcement officers, social workers, school resource officers, and prosecutors with the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively investigate cases of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.
Participants will explore how different agencies classify and investigate child abuse cases, ensuring a clear understanding of each partner’s role in the process. The course emphasizes the importance of early response, proper documentation, and trauma-informed interviewing techniques.
Topics Include:
• Patrol’s initial response and responsibilities at the scene
• Conducting minimal fact interviews and parental interviews
• Coordinating referrals and interagency communication
• Developing investigative strategies and game plans
• Managing child custody disputes and false allegations
• Documenting and photographing injuries at various healing stages
• Conducting joint investigations with Child Protective Services
• Understanding multidisciplinary team collaboration and follow-up procedures
Through real-world case studies and guided discussion, participants will learn how to build stronger, evidence-based cases that protect children and hold offenders accountable. This course is taught by either David Ruskey or Brian Williams.
