About the course


This 8-hour class focuses on recognizing the patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors and appearance that indicate the possibility of a mental health challenge, rather than focusing on specific illnesses. Learners are taught the MHFI Action Plan (ALGEE), which they can apply to noncrisis and crisis scenarios
Pre-Requisite to taking the instructor-led class:
Each student before attending the 8-hour instructor-led class must take a 20-minute pre-class,
on-line prep class. The class must be taken 24 hours prior to the instructor-led class. The Link to the on-line class will be provided at the time of enrollment.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this class, learners will:
 Describe the purpose of MHFA and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.
 Identify the impact of mental health and substance use challenges on the wellbeing of adults in the United States
 Explain that recovery from mental health or substance use challenge is possible
 Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving MHFA
 Explain the five steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE)
 Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults
 Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health and substance use challenges
 Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario in which a person shows early signs of mental health or a substance use challenge
 Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario in which a person shows worsening signs of mental health or a substance use challenge
 Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to a crisis scenario in which a person shows early signs of mental health or a substance use challenge
 Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of MHFA in a non-crisis or crisis situation
